Conway, Ark. – The Central Baptist College Mustangs became 40 game winners by defeating the Hannibal-LaGrange Trojans in an uncommon triple-header 5-2, 7-6, 9-8.
The strange scheduling was due to the weather forecasts for the weekend, when the series was originally scheduled to play. With this the last conference series for both squads, coaches agreed to do whatever necessary to get the games in and finish conference play.
The wins left CBC at 40-14 in regular season. A record feat for both the College and Head Coach Dr. Aaron Brister. "I turn forty next week, so I've been telling the guys let's get forty by forty." said Brister, "I just thank the Lord and my players for the effort, they played 28 innings today."
Jalin Lawson had two extra base hits in the effort. He singled in the first inning, doubled in the third inning, and homered in the seventh inning.
Brian Moreno picked up another win, striking out eight Hannibal-LaGrange University batters. Moreno allowed two earned runs, six hits and one walk over 6 2/3 innings. The Mustangs' closer Dillon Cates put away the final three outs to record the save.
In addition to Lawson, Josh Buczek was 2-4, 1 RBI and Ryan Johnson was 1-3, scoring a run.
Seth McLemore brought home the winning run to give the Mustangs the lead in the sixth inning. With the score tied at six, McLemore came to the plate and singled, bringing home Deonta Howard. McLemore had three RBIs on two hits for CBC.
Justin Southerland picked up the win with two innings of work. He allowed no earned runs, one hit and struck out three.
Senior Ryan Johnson's walk-off sacrifice fly was the winner for CBC in a 12 inning marathon. Johnson got on base three times in the game. He scored one run and had one RBI.
Each team blasted the other's pitching, and there were 17 total runs and 29 hits during the game. Managers of the two teams seemingly emptied their bullpens in search of the win, as there were nine pitchers used in the game.
Justin Southerland recorded the win for the Mustangs. He tossed two innings of shutout ball. He struck out two, walked one and surrendered no hits.
The top of the third saw Hannibal-LaGrange University take an early lead, 2-0. After posting one run in the fourth, Hannibal-LaGrange University again scored one in the fifth.
CBC quickly matched Hannibal-LaGrange University's strong inning with a one-run inning of its own in the fifth. Mustangs scored on an RBI single by Josh Buczek. Hannibal-LaGrange University tied the game in the ninth on a two-run single.
"I'm so proud of my seniors, on Senior Day, coming thru", said Brister." Ryan with the sacrifice fly, Josh Buczek hitting the ball hard to get us there. All the guys, they just never gave up."
Buczek finished 3-6, 1 RBI, and McLemore 2-6, 2 RBIs on the night.
