Batesville, Ark. (Sept. 26, 2017) – After a scoreless first half, Central Baptist Mustang men's soccer looked poised to secure their second victory of the season with two goals early in the second. However, two goals in the final five minutes of regulation and an overtime winner in the 97th minute went the way of American Midwest Conference rival Lyon (4-2-2, 3-0-1 AMC), as the Scots took down CBC (1-8, 1-3 AMC) 3-2 in overtime.
"We came out very strong!" said head coach Taylor Carnahan. "We have come a long way since the start of the season. Some poor decisions caused us to break down after a solid 80 minutes of play. We look forward to our next opportunity to bring the things we learn from this game into our next match."
Tyler Maynard (JR/White Hall, Ark.) opened the scoring for the Mustangs on a cross from Nestor Moguel (SR/Conway, Ark.), putting a header into the goal and giving CBC a 1-0 lead in the 56th minute. 10 minutes later, Callum Morris (SR/Leicester, England) put his own header into the goal on a cross from Thomas Milner (SR/Derby, England ) to give CBC a 2-0 lead that looked insurmountable for the Scots at the time.
Lyon responded, however, in the 87th minute to cut the lead in half, then tied the match at two just before the whistle to end regulation. Ulises Cordova, who tied the match in the 90th minute, ended the game in the 97th minute on a free kick from just outside the box to break the Mustangs hearts.
- Sam Collins (FR/Cape Town, South Africa) made six saves for CBC
- Morris' goal was his third of the season
- Maynard's goal was his first
- Moguel notched his second assist
- Milner's assist was his first of the season
- Cordova's two goals were his first two goals of the season
- Omar Fabila put Lyon on the board in the second half with his fourth goal of the season
