North Little Rock, Ark. – Playing for the second time this week, Central Baptist College baseball opened a four-game set with the Wildcats of Culver-Stockton College this afternoon at Burns Park. CBC (5-8) couldn't muster enough offense and the defense let them down, losing twice to CSC (4-4) by scores of 9-3 and 9-4.
CBC used a combined eight pitchers in the two games with only three pitchers, Caleb Muns, Justin Raines and Jose Monegro not allowing runs during their outings. CBC was also outslugged in the doubleheader, as CSC hit four home runs whereas CBC hit none.
GAME ONE – CSC 9, CBC 3 (SEVEN INNINGS)
The defense let starter Ben Slate down in the first two innings, as Culver Stockton scored four unearned runs to lead 4-0 after two. A Luke McBride double and a Jay French single in the bottom of the third cut the deficit to 4-2, but a three-run home run by the Wildcats in the fourth stretched the deficit back out to five. Dominick McBride brought home a run on a fielder's choice in the fifth to reduce the deficit to 7-3, but CSC scored two more in the sixth to put the score to its final margin. Slate started and was the loser, throwing two innings and allowing four unearned runs on one hit with a walk and four hit batters. Devin Koonce made his season debut this afternoon in relief of Slate, throwing two innings as well, allowing three runs on two hits with two walks and three Ks. Slayton Holland relieved Koonce and threw two innings, allowing two runs on four hits with a walk and Muns threw the seventh, allowing a hit and a walk with a strikeout.
GAME TWO – CSC 9, CBC 4 (SEVEN INNINGS)
Culver-Stockton scored in the first again in the second game, leading 1-0 after a half inning against starter Caleb Sollars. CBC would respond, however, posting three in the bottom half to lead 3-1 after one. Steven Stewart would start the scoring on a wild pitch, which was followed by an error on the shortstop and an RBI single by Gabe Walker. CSC put the game away in the second inning, striking for six runs against Sollars and reliever Heath Truett, who was making his CBC debut. The Wildcats would tack on two more in the fourth to make the deficit 9-3 before Ruben Hernandez brought the score to its final margin with a sac fly in the seventh. Sollars threw one inning and surrendered five runs on one hit with three walks and a strikeout. Truett threw the next 2.1 innings, allowing four runs on four hits with walk and two Ks. Justin Raines also made his CBC debut and threw 2.2 innings of hitless, scoreless relief, walking two and striking out two while Jose Monegro finished the seventh, allowing one hit and striking out one.
