Baseball Drops Series Opener To Lyon
Erik Holth, CBC Sports Information Director
Batesville, Ark. – Heading to the road for an American Midwest Conference game for the first time this season, Central Baptist College baseball was a Fred Wann Field tonight for a nine-inning contest against the Scots of Lyon College. CBC (17-13, 4-3 AMC) got an early lead, but could not hold, as Lyon (19-14, 4-3 AMC) capitalized on sloppy CBC defense, defeating the Mustangs 13-3.
For the first time in three outings, Garon Johnson did not throw a complete game, as he was out tonight after four and two-thirds and surrendering seven runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. Lyon was able to get productive outs, driving in runs four times with sacrifice flies.
CBC pounced on the Scots early, loading the bases in the first before an RBI groundout from Graham Dykes made it 1-0 Mustangs. Lyon would take a 2-1 lead in the bottom half and the deficit would stay that way until the third, when Dykes tied the game with a double to make it 2-2. The Scots would then add a run in the third, two in the fourth and two in the fifth to lead 7-2 before Jackson Lindsey, who relieved Johnson, came in and stuck out the final batter of the inning. A Wille Baez home run in the sixth made it 7-3 before the Scots pushed across six runs combined against relievers Ben Slate and Cole Edwards to end the game before its scheduled finish.
CBC will look to bounce back in tomorrow's doubleheader, which begins at noon and will be a seven-inning contest followed by a nine-inning finale.
