Erik Holth, CBC Sports Information Director
Fulton, Mo. – Looking to snap a five-game losing streak, Central Baptist College baseball started the final series of their current eight-game road trip today with an American Midwest Conference doubleheader against the Owls of William Woods. CBC (17-18, 4-7 AMC) dropped both games, losing game one 6-3 and controversially losing game two 6-5 to WWU (20-14, 8-3 AMC).
Andrew Killough was the game one starter while Garon Johnson started in game two. CBC outhit WWU in both games, but left 14 runners on base combined in the two games.
GAME ONE – WWU 6, CBC 3 (SEVEN INNINGS)
The Owls took an early lead in the first game, scoring a single run in the second to lead 1-0. CBC would tie the game in the third when an error brought in Jay French. WWU blew the game open with four runs in the fifth to chase Killough and lead 5-1 after five. An RBI groundout from Danilo Taborda and a run-scoring single by Austin Teal made it 5-3 in the sixth, but the Mustangs couldn't figure out the William Woods closer in the seventh. Killough threw 4.1 innings and allowed five runs on seven hits with a pair of walks and a pair of strikeouts. Devon Koonce, Justin Raines and Jackson Lindsey combined to throw the final 1.2 innings and allowed just one hit and one run with two walks and a strikeout between them.
GAME TWO – WWU 6, CBC 5
The Mustangs jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first three innings in game two, courtesy of an RBI single by Wille Baez in the first and a three-run home run from Logan Easterling, his 11th, in the third. Johnson ran into slight trouble in the fourth and fifth and allowed a run in each inning, but the Mustangs were able to stretch the lead to 5-2 on a solo home run by Ruben Hernandez, his fifth, in the sixth. Johnson would not factor in the decision, but left the game with CBC ahead 5-3 in the eighth. Lindsey would allow the go ahead run to cross the plate before Koonce came on to finish the game. Johnson pitched 7.1 innings and allowed six hits and four runs with three walks and six strikeouts. Lindsey was given the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit with two walks. Koonce allowed a hit and retired the only other batter he faced.
