Lady Mustangs Drop Hard Fought Battle to Eagles
Erik Holth, CBC Sports Information Director
Conway, Ark. – Not quite having locked up a spot in the American Midwest Conference tournament, Central Baptist College women's basketball hosted the Eagles of Williams Baptist University tonight at A.R. Reddin Fieldhouse. CBC (9-14, 7-12 American Midwest Conference) only trailed by four at halftime and nearly came back in the second half before falling to the current top team in the AMC WBU (22-3, 18-1 AMC) 77-67.
Aliya Grotjohn led the way for CBC with 16 points, while Raigan Head added 15 and Addison Hudspeth chipped in with 12. Head also grabbed 12 rebounds for her eighth double-double this season. CBC outshot the Eagles from the floor 41-40 percent and made two more three-pointers (eight to six) while outrebounding the Eagles 42-41. The difference in the contest was turnovers as CBC committed 23 while WBU committed only eight.
GAME FLOW
Following the opening basket of the game by Williams, CBC went on a 10-0 run and led 10-2 with 5:55 left in the first quarter. The lead was short lived, however, as WBU then went on a 12-2 run to take a 14-12 lead with 2:54 to go. The Lady Mustangs would tie it at 14 with 2:30 to play in the quarter before WBU scored on the ensuing possession and ended the quarter on a 9-2 run to put CBC down 23-16 after one. CBC got the deficit down to one in the second quarter, but couldn't get any closer, trailing 43-39 at the break. Unfortunately, that's as close as CBC would get the rest of the night.
MUSTANG NOTES
- Head is 26 points away from becoming just the fourth player in program history to score at least 400 points in a season
- Head has 93 made free throws this season, seven shy of becoming the second player in program history to make 100 in a season
- Head's eight double-doubles are the second most in a season all-time
